Jacob Woods’ fourth hit of the game broke a 7-7 deadlock as Kansas City Kansas Community College broke away for a 10-8 win over Maple Woods Tuesday.
The win boosted the Blue Devils’ overall record to 12-7 heading into a pair of Jayhawk Conference doubleheaders at Johnson County Friday (4 p.m.) and Saturday (1 p.m.).
Woods’ double in the sixth came after a walk and sacrifice bunt and the Blue Devils added what proved to be the winning runs in the eighth on just one hit, an RBI single by Mitch Glessner following a walk, stolen base and an error. Cole Frakes, who allowed five hits and two runs in 4.2 innings of relief, got the win.
Down 1-0 early, KCKC went ahead 2-1 in the first on a single by Woods, Dean Long’s run-scoring double and a passed ball and the Blue Devils added two more runs in the third on singles by Woods and Poncho Amaya, an RBI double by Calleb Waddle and an error.
Maple Woods, however, went back ahead 5-4 in the fourth, putting together four hits in a 4-run uprising. KCKCC regained the lead 7-5 in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three times with two out. A hit batsman, a double by Woods and a single by Amaya scored two runs and Long stole home for the third. Getting a solo home run from Matt Elmore, Maple Woods tied the game with two runs in the fifth before Woods put the Blue Devils back in front to stay with his sixth inning double.
