Following a long-awaited vote Tuesday, Kansas High School Class 4A will be split into two divisions.
With a vote of 42-22, 4A schools agreed to split the 64 schools into two separate 32 school divisions for volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball starting with the 2013-2014 school year. Football will also be split beginning with the 2014 school year. The new divisions will compete in separate postseason and KSHSAA state championships.
Using this year’s enrollments numbers published by the KSHSAA, Piper, Sumner Academy and Bonner Springs would be competing in the upper division.
Bishop Ward with an enrollment of 354 would be in the lower division.
Schools in Class 5 and 6A would not be affected.
The KSHSAA classifies schools in every sport but football each fall. Football is reclassified every two years.
