Kansas City Kansas Community College has vaulted to No. 15 in the national Division II women’s basketball rankings by the National Junior College Athletic Association.
Off to a 10-1 start, the Lady Blue Devils’ only loss was to the nation’s No. 3 ranked team, North Iowa Community College (9-0). The loss, a 91-87 decision in a see-saw clash in the Dale Howard Classic in Iowa Falls, was decided at the foul line where North Iowa converted 31 of 35 free throws to 16 of 24 for KCKCC.
KCKCC is one of three Jayhawk Conference teams ranked in the Top 20. Highland (12-0) is ranked fourth and Johnson County (9-0) sixth in the latest poll. KCKCC is averaging 85.4 points this season while limiting foes to 56.6 per game.
The Lady Blue Devils will get a chance to climb even higher this weekend when they face No. 19 Central Nebraska Saturday in the Southeast Nebraska Classic in Beatrice. Both KCKCC teams are in the Classic and both will play Southeast on Friday.
However, KCKCC will be without sophomore guard Samantha Hurst, the lone returning starter from last season. Sidelined indefinitely with a leg injury, Hurst is averaging 12.6 points per game and had a career high 25 against Neosho County.
