The Blue Devils of Kansas City Kansas Community College will take a two-game winning streak into an eight-game stretch against two of their top rivals in the Jayhawk East today.
Sweeping Longview 3-1 and 8-3 on Tuesday, the Blue Devils play at Johnson County today and next Wednesday in a pair of 3 p.m. doubleheaders and then entertain Coffeyville in a four-game set Saturday and Sunday starting at 1 p.m. each day.
At 8-8, KCKCC is one of four teams at .500 chasing second place Coffeyville (12-6) and third place Johnson County (8-6). Cowley is the runaway leader at 18-0.
The Blue Devils (15-11 overall) managed just three hits in the 3-1 win in the opener against Longview but then banged out 10 in the 8-3 nightcap.
Trailing 1-0 in the opener, KCKCC tied it in the fourth on a hit batsman, Pancho Amaya’s single and a throwing error, took the lead 2-1 on Trent Sullivan’s squeeze bunt and added an insurance run in the fifth on Caleb Waddell’s pinch double, a sacrifice bunt by Landon Teal and Andrew Kreiling’s sacrifice fly. Cole Frakes (2-0) got the pitching win, scattering eight hits before Cisco Medina struck out the last two Lakers for the save.
Dean Long and Kreiling each had three hits and Brandon Witt two in the nightcap. The Blue Devils again trailed 1-0 in the fourth before scoring three times with two out. Kreiling started it with a one-out single and with two out, Lucas Norton singled in the tying run, Jacob Woods doubled in the go-ahead run and Long singled in the third.
The Blue Devils then put the game out of reach, scoring twice in the fifth on singles by Witt and Kreiling and a passed ball; and adding three more in the sixth without a hit as two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly by Amaya scored one run, a second crossed on a passed ball and Witt scored the third on a ground ball.
Eli Egger got his second win without a loss, allowing six hits and three runs in 5.1 innings before Medina retired the final five hitters for his second save of the day.
