Turner hopes for another great year

Under returning quarterback Nick Bloomer, Turner could be a force to reckon with this year in the Kaw Valley League.
It will be the third year starting at quarterback for Bloomer, a junior.
The Golden Bears will have experience on defense and size up front, said coach Allen Terrell. He notes that there are a lot of players coming back from the best team in the history of the school. The team was 8-2 and went to the state playoffs in Class 5A.
“We hope to be as good as we have ever been,” Terrell said.
Besides Bloomer, returning for offense are five other starters: David Bernal, wide receiver-running back; Jake Rhodes, offensive tackle; Phillip Chappell, offensive guard; Johnathan Yanez, offensive guard; and Eric Haygood, wide receiver.
On defense, seven starters return: Jake Rhodes, defensive end; Daleroy Davey, defensive end; Demetrius McDaniel, linebacker; Laron Mitchell, linebacker; Chris John, linebacker; Eric Haygood, cornerback; and Forrest Carroll, cornerback.
Eighteen seniors – 16 of them returning – are on this year’s squad. There are some new players filling skilled positions on offense.
Winning the KVL will not be easy.
“We would have to play our best football week in and week out,” Terrell said. “There are no pushovers in the KVL.”
He said new players to watch include Nick Rodriguez, free safety, kicker and punter; Bill Guckian, center; and DeAndre Walters, running back.
Turner opens the season at 7 p.m. Sept. 3 with an away game at Blue Valley.
