Many starters return for Bonner Springs

Bonner Springs will have starters returning in 14 positions this season.
The Chieftains will have good speed at the skill positions, and the linemen will have to grow each week for the team to become better, according to coach Lew Kasselman.
Starting quarterback will be Jourdaine Smallwood, who also returns on defense.
Returning seniors include Lucas Porras, Nick Carver, Austin Lucas, Brian Callahan, Joe Hilario, Jonathan Bonnett, Logan Opat and Brandon Clark.
Returning starters are Porras, Carver, Smallwood, Callahan, Jose Contreras, Lucas, Drew Hearn, Jonathan Jackson, Steve Williams, many playing two positions.
In order to win the Kaw Valley League, Bonner Springs would have to be consistent, eliminate turnovers and improve at the line, according to Kasselman. He expects Turner, Mill Valley and Basehor to be competitive in the league this year.
Young players to watch are Les Wessel, offensive line, Kyle Dumler, freshman punter, and Derek Rodger, sophomore kicker.
Bonner Springs opens the season Sept. 3 with an away game at Topeka Seaman.
