Women’s Equality Week will include two events in Kansas City, Kan.
The metro-wide celebration includes a discussion by women state legislators from Wyandotte County from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, at Kansas City Kansas Community College, 7250 State Ave., and a presentation on Latina empowerment through education at 6 p.m. Aug. 29 at the South Branch Library, 3104 Strong Ave., Kansas City, Kan.
The week begins with a kickoff rally from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, at the Plaza, Mill Creek Park, 47th and Main, Kansas City, Mo. The week celebrates the 93rd anniversary of women gaining the right to vote.
Many different Women’s Equality Week events are planned throughout the metropolitan area. All events are free and open to the public, and all participants are volunteers.
Speakers at the KCKCC discussion on women’s issues in the Legislature include panelists State Sen. Pat Pettey, D-6th Dist.; State Rep. Kathy Wolfe Moore, D-36th Dist.; and State Rep. Valdenia Winn, D-34th Dist.
Co-sponsors of the Aug. 29 discussion are the MainStream Coalition, and the AAUW at KCKCC. The discussion will be in KCKCC Room 2325, lower level Jewell Building, 7250 State Ave. It is free and open to the public. A panel discussion from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 29 at the South Branch Library is on the topic of “Empowerment through Education: Si, se puede – The Latina Perspective.”
The moderator of the discussion is Irene Caudillo with participants Jackie Loya Torres and Elena Morales. Others are expected to participate, as well. Light refreshments will be provided. Also, Barbara Clark-Evans, director of the Intercultural Center at KCKCC, is one of the panelists for the “3-State Strategy: Equal Rights Amendment” discussion at 6 p.m. Aug. 27 at the National Archives, 400 W. Pershing Road, Kansas City, Mo. This event is sponsored by the AAUW and League of Women Voters.
