Remember the days when you could get a shave and a haircut at the local barber?
Those days have gone by, a lot of people agree. However in this case, it is not true. There is a place in Kansas City, Kan., where you still can get a shave and a haircut -- José's Barbershop, 537 Central Ave.
This is a place where you can still get a shave and a haircut at a very reasonable price. I remember the days when my father would take me to his barber where you could get a shave and a haircut and conversation was supreme. As you enter José's you will find experienced barbers taking care of their customers in a very personable way, and like always, the conversation is supreme, everything from the various sporting events to local news is always discussed there.
There are a lot of barbers in the Kansas City metropolitan area who no longer do shaves for some unknown reason. Not in the case of José's Barbershop, which still does it the old-fashioned way. They take a straight-edge razor and give you a fantastic shave. If you've ever had a shave like this it is so relaxing and when they're done you really look great. I remember my granddad would go to his barber every two weeks and get a great shave like they do at José's Barbershop.
There are some other barber shops in Kansas City, Kan., that also do shaves, however José's Barbershop is preferred by some because of its superior customer service and ability.
José's Barbershop was started 11 years by José Montanez, who is originally from Puerto Rico. José, after coming to the United States and getting his citizenship, started in New York City. After four years in New York City he decided to move to the Midwest and open a barber shop.
“The reason why I decided to move here is because of the people, they are great, a true melting pot which I really enjoy,” Montanez said.
The barber shop’s hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, and 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. It is closed Monday. The shop’s telephone number is 913-708-4395.
