Urban Kids Fishing Derby planned on Saturday
Urban American Outdoors and the Kansas City Kansas Community College will hold the Eighth Annual Urban Kids Fishing Derby May 18. The Saturday fishing experience will be held on May 18, at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Pond near the Conference Center by the duck pond, located on the south end of the campus at 7250 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the derby kicks off soon after, lasting until noon. Those interested in having their youngsters participate, may email firstname.lastname@example.org for forms or call to pre-register, there will also be forms at the event. The derby is limited to the first 250 kids.
Democrats to meet May 18
The Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast will meet Saturday, May 18, at a new location, Johnny Carino's Italian Restaurant, 1706 Village West Parkway, in Village West, Kansas City, Kan. Johnny Carino's is located near the Bob Evans Restaurant.The speakers this month will be State Sen. David Haley, D-4th Dist., State Rep. Valdenia Winn, D-34th Dist., and State Rep. Stan Frownfelter, D-37th Dist. The cost for the breakfast buffet, which includes tax, service and tip, is $10, or $7 for students and those on limited income.Reservations are definitely requested, but you do not have to make a reservation to attend. Free community bike rodeo to be May 18
Elementary-aged kids will have the opportunity to learn tips on cycling safety, participate in interactive activities that promote health and safety and to sneak a peek at attractions at Schlitterbahn Kansas City Waterpark at a free family event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 18. The annual KCK Kiwanis West Bike Rodeo is back for the seventh year and planners anticipate a large turnout. Event sponsors plan to distribute up to 300 free bike safety helmets and T-shirts to participants. The event will be held rain or shine in the parking lot and entrance area of Schlitterbahn Kansas City Waterpark, 9400 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Kids are encouraged to bring their bicycles.
Church offers Breakfast Club
White Church Christian Church, 1 block north of Parallel Parkway at 2200 N. 85th St., will have a special guest speaker at the Breakfast Club at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 18. A pastor from Nairobi, Kenya, will be relating some of his duties as a Christian missionary to the United States and as a counselor to Kenyans who live here. The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall.
Trail and lake cleanup planned
A trail and lake spring cleanup is planned from 10 a.m. to noon May 18 at the Schlagle Environmental Library, Wyandotte County Lake. Volunteers are needed. Supplies are provided. Volunteers should wear long pants and sturdy shoes. For more information, call 913-299-2384.
‘Read to a Dog’ program offered
Children ages 5 to 11 may participate in a free “Read to a Dog” program from 1 to 2 p.m. May 18 at the West Wyandotte Library auditorium, 1737 N. 82nd St. The reading education assistance dogs from the Pets for Life organization will provide a safe environment for children to improve their reading skills. Children under 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited to the first 40 children, and groups of six or more must call ahead to 913-596-5800, Ext. 1016.
Authors to sign books
Authors Aaron Barnhart and Diane Eickhoff will discuss and sign their new book, “The Big Divide,” from 2 to 3 p.m. May 18 at the South Branch Library, 3104 Strong Ave., Meeting Room A, Kansas City, Kan. The book is a travel guide to historic and Civil War sites in the Missouri and Kansas border region.
T-Bones to play Saturday night
