Grand-Am SFP racing at Kansas Speedway
For real live Grand-Am racing on the new road course at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., Saturday is the inaugural day for races.
Two racing events are scheduled, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday.
Also taking place is a Kansas City Barbecue Society State Championship Barbecue contest, and a post-race concert with Trapt.

Pancake breakfast to benefit Cross-Lines Christmas Store
Zion United Church of Christ will hold its annual pancake breakfast to benefit the Cross-Lines Christmas Store. The breakfast will be from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at the church, 2711 N. 72nd St., Kansas City, Kan. The cost of the breakfast will be $6 per person at the door.
Ribbon-cutting set Saturday for Piper Community Center
The old Piper West Elementary School, 3130 N. 122nd St., has been turned into the new Piper Community Center.
The ribbon-cutting will be at 10 a.m. Aug. 17. The center has a renovated gym for community use, as well as meeting space and classroom space. Program space will be available for community groups including senior citizens and youth groups.
The center is a joint project of the Unified Government and the Piper School District. The building also will have classroom space for the early childhood education program and school district offices.
Schlagle plans Community Caring Day Aug. 17
Schlagle's Community Caring Day will be from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 17, at Schlagle High School, 2214 N. 59th St., Kansas City, Kan.
Schlagle High School along with the Schlagle Alumni Association and New York Life will sponsor the third annual event.
Parents and students of Schlagle High School are invited to participate. The first 150 students who are accompanied by a parent and attend an information session will be eligible to receive a free sports physical.
Information sessions will be presented on cyber bullying, school loop training, college information and financial aid assistance.
Other events include child identification and fingerprinting, plus activities for young children parents and students.

Artist reception planned
An artist reception is planned from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 17 at the Main Kansas City, Kan., Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave. The art reception is for Elaine Grisnik, a Kansas City, Kan., artist with an exhibit of paintings on display at the library. Refreshments will be served.
Church plans Back-to-School Carnival
Our Lady and St. Rose Catholic Church, 2300 N. 8th, is planning a Back-to-School Carnival from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 17.
Church plans annual festival Saturday
St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 708 N. 4th St., is planning its annual festival after the 4 p.m. Mass on Saturday, Aug. 17, on the church grounds. Food, drink, face painting and games are planned. A free polka dance featuring Don Lipovac will be held from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on the Strawberry Hill Museum grounds next door.
