Betty loved the casinos. She would spend many hours "feeding the slots" as she would call it with her daughter-in-law Debi. In her later years, she was unable to get around very well but the urge to gamble was stronger than ever. That’s when she learned how to use Facebook to connect with online games.
One of the greatest joys Betty had was sending $1 in each of her grandchildren's birthday cards. She knew they didn't care about the $1 but she loved the phone calls she would receive from each and everyone of them thanking her for the money. She cherished the times she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The phone calls she would receive, the hugs of hello and goodbye. She received a letter from one grandson, Seth McLaughlin, while he was in the Army. She took that letter and put it in her lock box for safe keeping. That's how much her grandchildren meant to her.
She always attended sport programs and was a fan of every game her children and grandchildren played. It was not long ago she came to watch her daughter, son; granddaughter and grandson play sand volleyball. Nothing kept her from seeing and being close to her family. If it had something to do with family, if she could, she would be there.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Bernice; husband, Merle; and son, Jay.
She is survived by her sister, Arlene VanHorn; sons, Steven (Dawn), David (Jocelyn), James (Janet) McLaughlin; daughter, Lyn Channell; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Betty was an advocate of saving animals, stray kittens mostly. A donation in her name may be made to the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City.
