Friends of Yates Inc. is holding its 13th Annual Awards and Faith Luncheon, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25.
The event will raise awareness and provide prevention information in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness month.
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in every four women has experienced domestic violence in her lifetime, and over half of these incidents involve an intimate partner, who was a boyfriend, girlfriend, or spouse. Moreover, most abusive encounters go unreported, and children exposed to these harmful behaviors also suffer. Also, as reported by the Domestic Violence Resource Center, tragically, “three women are killed every day.”
To counter these injustices, this year marks the 33rd year that, the Della Gill-Joyce H. Williams Center for battered women and their children has been providing shelter and transitional housing, substance abuse counseling, advocacy and more to over 3,500 individuals within the community.
Friends of Yates Inc., the parent company of the center, celebrates 100 years of providing continuous service, including crime awareness efforts, emergency food distributions, and more to over 7,000 individuals.
This year’s theme is “Empowering Women...Expanding Awareness...Eradicating Violence.”
Annual supporters will be appreciated, key contributors will be further highlighted, and a dramatic presentation entitled, “You Don’t See Me,” by Carolynn Washington, will all be part of the program. A final display of supporter gratitude will include an appreciation lunch buffet after the ceremony in the dining hall downstairs.
RSVPs to this event located at 1418 Garfield Ave., Kansas City, Kan., may be submitted by phone or email before Monday, Oct. 21, with the number of guests attending: 913-321-1566 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
