A dedication ceremony for the Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools’ Earl Watson Jr. Early Childhood Center will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17. The preschool is located two blocks east of 67th Street on Waverly.
Watson, a guard with the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association and a 1997 graduate of Washington High School, will be on hand for the ceremony.
The preschool is one of three buildings that formerly housed students from Hazel Grove Elementary School, before the new Hazel Grove building opened this fall. At that time, this building was transformed into a district preschool. The Board of Education approved naming the newly designated preschool site in honor of Watson during its Aug. 27 Board of Education meeting.
Watson attended Hazel Grove during his elementary years. He was inspired by the teachers and staff in KCKPS to pursue his dreams, and to put forth the effort and commitment that it takes to be successful. His leadership, and his ongoing commitment to providing opportunities for young people to pursue their dreams in the district that educated him, demonstrate that he has never forgotten those who molded and shaped his life.
The Earl Watson Early Childhood Center serves 147 students in both morning and afternoon sessions.
