Topeka, Kan. – Leon McGee, 35, of Bonner Springs is feeling pretty lucky this week after uncovering a $20,000 top prize on a $2 Bonus Crossword instant scratch ticket.
“After visiting my kids yesterday, I stopped to get cigarettes and bought the Bonus Crossword ticket with the $2 I had left,” the winner told Lottery officials. “I didn’t scratch it, though, until I was at my friend’s house about five hours later.”
McGee described himself as “remarkably calm” after discovering the large prize he had won. His friend, however, was a different story.
“My friend was the anxious one,” McGee said on Tuesday. “He wanted to drive to Topeka last night and stay in a motel so we could be at the lottery office first thing this morning when it opened. We didn’t do that.”
McGee said he is hoping his good luck will continue Wednesday night with the Powerball drawing.
“I’m definitely going to get a Powerball ticket, with Power Play, so I can multiply my prize if I win one,” McGee said. “I don’t expect to win the jackpot, but maybe I’ll get lucky again and win another prize.”
The Powerball jackpot for Wednesday, Sept. 18, is estimated at $400 million, with a cash option of $223.6 million.
McGee plans to spend the $20,000 he won on Bonus Crossword paying bills and possibly buying a new vehicle. He purchased his lucky ticket at Discount Smokes, located at 13101 Kansas Ave. in Bonner Springs.
