Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas recently announced a potential record-breaking goal of $2 million for its 40th Annual Snow Ball event to be held on Jan. 18 at the Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center Exhibition Hall.
“We waited until this 40th year to make the fundraising goal $2 million," said Jeanne Haake, president of the event with her husband, Charlie. "The common mission for the Snow Ball is helping others in need. $2 million will allow Catholic Charities to help so many people."
Snow Ball has grown extensively over the past 39 years from a potluck dinner to an elegant yearly gathering complete with black-tie apparel, cocktail reception, formal dining and dancing. Since its inception, revenue from Snow Ball fundraising efforts has exceeded $21,159,898 in support of Catholic Charities and helped hundreds of thousands of people in the community from all faiths. However, even with so many served, the need for supportive services continues, and has grown rapidly in the past several years, a spokesman said.
Jan Lewis, outgoing CEO, said that many appear to think the economic uncertainty might be easing. However, the need for basic assistance such as food, shelter and utilities, will continue to run at historical highs due to many factors including diminished job opportunities and cuts in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Proceeds from the Snow Ball event provide assistance to many programs including the agency’s six Emergency Assistance Centers, two traveling Resource Buses, Shalom House for homeless men, and many other areas.
“Catholic Charities provides resources for so many people in need,” Haake said. “The need is so great and our job is to get that message out to the public.”
Several Wyandotte County people are involved with the annual fundraiser, and Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, which has a location at 2220 Central Ave., is home to a large emergency assistance center, food and clothing pantry, foster grandparents program and refugee program. The organization serves 21 counties in northeast Kansas from several offices.
The cost to attend the event is $250 per person or $2,500 for a table of 10. A patron gift is also an opportunity to support Snow Ball with no tickets attached, these gifts are 100 percent tax deductible.
