The KC Metro Area ALR Walk with Us to Cure Lupus will be held Nov. 2 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, the home of the T-Bones, in Kansas City, Kan.
A spokesman said all of the funds raised go to finding a cure for lupus, an autoimmune disease that affects 1.5 million Americans.
Eddie Kennison and Erik Gaucher of Wells Fargo are honorary co-chairs for the Nov. 2 walk.
The Alliance for Lupus Research is a nonprofit national organization founded by New York Jets owner Robert “Woody” Johnson. The ALR raises funds to cure lupus.
The KC Metro Area Walk to Cure Lupus on Nov. 2 will take place at the T-Bones stadium, CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
One hundred percent of the proceeds raised by the ALR Walk go to research because the ALR board of directors funds all administrative and fundraising costs, a spokesman said.
One of the Chiefs’ most philanthropic players, Eddie Kennison started his fundraising efforts in 2003 after Shimika was diagnosed with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect the joints and the major organs of the body including the heart, lungs, kidneys and brain. Symptoms include extreme fatigue and painful or swollen joints. The Kennisons formed a foundation to raise funds for research for a lupus cure and to provide support for families who are dealing with the disease. In 2012, the Kennisons officially partnered with the ALR to continue their efforts for lupus research.
The Kennisons annually host the Alliance for Lupus Research’s “Walk With Us,” a walk to raise money to find a cure for the disease. Eddie Kennison has been involved in many other charitable endeavors helping out near his hometown in Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina as well as First Downs for Down Syndrome, and several charitable events of fellow players. Because of his charitable work, Kennison was nominated in 2006 for the prestigious Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. Kennison officially retired from the Kansas City Chiefs this spring after 13 years in the NFL.
The mission of the Alliance for Lupus Research is to find better treatments and ultimately prevent and cure systemic lupus erythematosus or lupus, a debilitating autoimmune disease, by supporting medical research.
