The first Thanksgiving, we are told, was a peaceful meal, a gathering between Pilgrims and Native Americans.
The first Thanksgiving was a sharing of the fruits of the harvest with fellow human beings, an effort to sit down together at a meal with people who had different backgrounds, and peacefully talk with them.
Today, we are heartened to see occasional instances, however small they may be, of the continuing spirit of Thanksgiving.
We need to bring that same spirit to the forefront in the next few months as Congress debates difficult issues. The nation has been damaged by the divisiveness of recent squabbling, but we remain eternally optimistic that our leaders will one day see the light and in the spirit of the first Thanksgiving, sit down to make friends and work out their differences amicably.
If they can achieve this spirit of Thanksgiving, they will provide a model for all to follow, down to the smallest units of government and down to the smallest classrooms and workplaces.
Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving, one that will exemplify the spirit of the first Thanksgiving.
