Volunteers have heart
Volunteers have heart
The month of February is often associated with the symbol of a heart.
There are a couple reasons for that; Feb. 14 is Valentines Day and the month of February is American Heart Month. The color red and the heart symbol appear frequently on cards, decorations and advertisements.
The symbol of a heart makes me think of volunteers. To me, the symbol of a heart implies energy and caring, a good description of a volunteer. For those of you with heart, here are a few suggestions for volunteer activities.
Are you a fan of Dr. Seuss? You need to know about the upcoming activities planned by Reach Out and Read to celebrate Dr. Seuss. There are a number of ways that volunteers can participate in the celebrations. Individuals or groups can help by planning and sponsoring a Dr. Seuss Party at one or more of the 46 Reach Out and Read pediatric clinics in the Kansas City area. Party planners can plan, provide, and set-up decorations and possibly a healthy snack. The parties will be held between Feb. 25 and March 3. Decorating tips and ideas are available from ROR. Volunteers can also read their favorite Dr. Seuss book in pediatric clinic waiting areas on Feb. 29, March 1, March 5 or March 6. Maybe you like interacting with older adults. Kansas City Presbyterian Manor has a variety of volunteer opportunities. Volunteers can deliver mail, serve ice cream and popcorn in Rainbow Room, visit with residents, help with arts and crafts or chapel services to name just a few of the opportunities available. Community Housing of Wyandotte County has a need for a part-time volunteer receptionist. They are interested in someone willing to commit to volunteer 3-4 per day, Monday through Fridays. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you are bilingual (Spanish/English) that is a plus. For more information contact Susan at 913-342-7580.
