New casino a key to many economic development projects here

altGuest column

The opening of the Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway represents a key component of the many successful economic development projects that have taken place throughout our community.

The commitment by Penn National Gaming and International Speedway Corp. to build a destination world class Las Vegas-style casino builds upon our positive reputation of being a top regional tourist destination; attracting more visitors to our community to shop, eat, and have a great time every year. It also further solidifies the commitment and ability of this governing body to think outside the box and seek innovative ways to unite us, create new jobs and move this city forward. This kind of creative thinking has undoubtedly helped rejuvenate our strong entrepreneurial spirit in a way that has helped build partnerships that create the kinds of major investment opportunities we're experiencing in our community today.

The $411-million dollar investment in the casino was ranked as the second largest construction project in the metro area in 2011. The project created approximately 1,700 construction jobs. There will be more than 1,000 permanent full time jobs once the casino opens. The casino will not only bring additional economic benefits to our local economy, it will have benefits across Kansas.

Wyandotte County voters overwhelmingly approved casino gaming in 2007. Despite the challenges that took us to get to this point today, as a community we remained resilient and committed to the success of this project.

The Unified Government and its residents have figured it out. We know how to do things right! Google, LiveStrong Sporting Park, Kansas Speedway, Legends Outlets, Sara Lee Plant, Prescott Plaza, Plaza at the Speedway, 39th and Rainbow and Cerner. The impact and benefits of the casino to our community will be far-reaching and have a positive impact for years to come. This is only the beginning for us. Just wait until you see what's next!

Joe Reardon is the mayor and CEO of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County-Kansas City, Kan.
