The Unified Government will start taking applications Friday, Aug. 16, for an open Municipal Court judge position.
Mayor Mark Holland tonight appointed three UG commissioners to a Judicial Nominating Commission to choose three finalists for the position.
The three UG commissioners are Angela Markley, Gayle Townsend and Tarence Maddox. Markley will chair the nominating committee. Originally Commissioner Hal Walker was one of Holland’s choices, but Walker took his name off the nominating commission list, according to Holland.
The UG meeting where this was discussed tonight was attended by a local attorney interested in the issue.
Interested applicants will have until Aug. 30 to apply for the position, according to Holland.
After screening, the list of applicants will be narrowed to three by the judicial commission. Then the Unified Government Commission will receive the nominees at the second meeting of September to select the judge. Temporary judges are filling the vacancy until then.
The vacancy in Division 2 on the Municipal Court was created by the appointment of Judge Aaron Roberts to be a judge of the Wyandotte County District Court. The term of the municipal judge will be through Sept. 30, 2016.
According to a memo from UG chief attorney Jody Boeding, qualifications for judge include U.S. citizenship and a resident of the Unified Government while in office; admitted to practice law in Kansas; five years experience in the practice of law or as a judge in Kansas or as a law professor; full-time judges may not practice law during the term of office; and they must possess high personal, moral and professional integrity befitting the position.
Boeding stated in the memo that the attorney general has issued an opinion in a past case that the selection of a municipal judge must be done in an open meeting.
According to Holland, the three finalists would be interviewed by the UG Commission in an open meeting, one at a time.
The UG stated that applications and resumes should be submitted to the Unified Government of Wyandotte-KCK Human Resources Department, 701 N. 7th St., Ste. 646, Kansas City, Kan. 66101; emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org, or faxed to 913-573-5006 to the attention of J. Renee Ramirez, director of human resources, no later than 5 p.m. Aug. 30. Additional information and application forms can be found at http://www.wycokck.org/InternetDept.aspx?id=6302.
