Shawnee, Kan., police officers chased a suspect from Shawnee to I-70 and K-7 in the early morning hours.
According to a news release from the Shawnee police, shots were fired by Shawnee officers in Kansas City, Kan., as they tried to take a suspect into custody.
After an accident west of K-7, the suspect ran on foot for a short distance before he was taken into custody, according to the news release.
The suspect was taken to a hospital where he is being treated for injuries that are believed to be non-life-threatening, the news release stated.
According to the news release, the incident started with a robbery at 8:35 p.m. May 23 at the Halftime Liquor Store at 15810 Shawnee Mission Parkway. Two victims of the robbery were placed in a cooler before the suspect left the business. Neither was injured.
The Shawnee news release stated the suspect description there was similar to other robberies that recently took place in Shawnee.
Two Shawnee officers started pursuing the suspect vehicle, a black Chevrolet Cobalt, and the pursuit went into Kansas City, Kan., where the officers lost contact with the suspect. Shawnee and Kansas City, Kan., officers continued to look for the suspect through the late evening hours, according to the news release.
At about 12:15 a.m., Kansas City, Kan., officers located the suspect again and pursued the suspect on I-435 to Shawnee, the news release stated. Shawnee officers re-engaged the pursuit at I-435 and Johnson Drive. The pursuit continued west on Shawnee Mission Parkway and then north of K-7 Highway.
As the suspect attempted to get off K-7 and onto I-70, he lost control of the vehicle, the news release stated. Shots were fired by Shawnee officers attempting to take the suspect into custody, the news release stated. The suspect continued in his vehicle westbound on I-70 in the eastbound lanes and was in a collision 1.5 miles west of K-7.
The suspect then ran on foot for a short distance until he was taken into custody by officers on the scene, the news release stated.
