In a rare pre-primary endorsement, Mayor Joe Reardon and former Mayor Carol Marinovich today endorsed Commissioner Mark Holland for mayor.

Five candidates, including three UG commissioners, Holland, Ann Murguia and Nathan Barnes, are running for mayor in the primary Feb. 26. Also running are Cordell Meeks III and Janice Witt.

At a news conference today at the Hilton Garden Inn, Reardon talked about the Unified Government continuing in the same direction it has for the past 16 years.

“I’ve spent a lot of time with Mark and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed serving with him on the commission,” Reardon said. “I know he has a strong vision for Wyandotte County and understands that collaboration, hard work and persistence will keep Wyandotte County moving forward on the path that our residents, businesses and leaders have forged during the past 16 years.”

Marinovich, who was mayor from 1995 to 2005, talked about the positive results from the unified city-county government.

“We’ve seen an expanded economic development base, increased amenities and services for residents and a more efficient and effective local government,” she said. “What Wyandotte County needs now is a mayor who can build upon that success and continue to move the county forward for all residents.”

Marinovich said she thinks Holland is the right candidate for mayor because he knows and understands the whole county. She said she had looked at all the candidates and thought that Holland has “strength of character, vision and a proven track record, along with being a man of integrity and honesty.”
