State Sen. Pat Pettey, D-6th Dist., was sworn in Monday afternoon for her first term representing Kansas Senate District 6, which is mostly southern Wyandotte County.
Pettey is a former Wyandotte County-Kansas City, Kan., Unified Government commissioner and Kansas state representative.
"I'm honored to serve the people of District 6," Pettey said. "This session is going to be full of challenges, but I'm prepared to work hard and bring common sense solutions to the table."
Pettey retired from the Turner school district in 2006 after 36 years of teaching and is committed to education, job creation, and a fair tax system. Pettey joins seven others in the Democratic Senate caucus.
"We are excited to welcome Senator Pettey to the caucus," said Senate Democratic Leader Anthony Hensley. "She comes with a wealth of experience, knowledge and leadership as well as a passion to serve her community."
Pettey defeated Republican Sen. Chris Steineger in the fall election.
