President Obama visited a Ford stamping plant facility in Liberty, Mo., to drive home a message to Congress: “We can’t just not pay our bills.”
In remarks to autoworkers at the Ford plant in a Kansas City, Mo., suburb, Obama today stated, “I won’t negotiate over the full faith and credit of the United States.”
He said Congress has been threatening not to pass the budget and not to authorize the Treasury Department to pay its bills. He compared the situation to a person who bought a Ford truck made at the plant, and then refused to pay the monthly bills on it.
“It's like they do this every six months, isn't it?” he asked. He said he is happy to have the debate over health care with Congress, “but you don't have to threaten to blow the whole thing up just because you don't get your way.”
Obama also had strong praise for American workers.
“We've shown the world the American people are tough and resilient. The only thing built tougher than Ford trucks are American workers,” he said.
