Kidnapping suspect Elijah McPike allegedly took his life Aug. 13 in the Wyandotte County Jail, according to a statement from the Wyandotte County Sheriff's office.
McPike was awaiting his return to the Harrison County, Mo., to answer charges of kidnapping.
He allegedly hanged himself. A jail spokesman said that an autopsy will be performed to determine if there were any other factors involved. McPike knew on Tuesday that he was to be returned to Missouri today to face charges, the spokesman said.
A jail spokesman said there was no indication that McPike was suicidal, and he was not on suicide watch. Checks were done each hour on the jail cells, and McPike was present for the cell check at 7:33 p.m., but he was discovered dead at 8:24 p.m. Tuesday.
McPike, 23, and a 16-year-old girl from Missouri were the subjects of an intensive search last weekend, and were picked up by police in the 81st and Georgia area of Kansas City, Kan.
A protection from abuse order had been filed against McPike by the girl's family. The girl is OK and is back home with her mother, sources said.
