A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper’s report states that a school bus that crashed Aug. 21 slid off the side of the ramp from K-7 to K-32 in Bonner Springs.
More than 20 persons in the school bus accident went to hospitals with possible injuries, according to the trooper’s report. The injured were taken to the University of Kansas Hospital, Providence Medical Center, Overland Park Regional Medical Center and Children’s Mercy Hospital. Most students have now been released.
The 66-year-old bus driver, a man from Kansas City, Mo., was taken to an area hospital. He had been extricated from the bus by emergency workers.
The accident happened about 12:50 p.m. Aug. 21 on the K-7 southbound ramp to K-32 in Bonner Springs, Kan.
The Durham School Services bus was carrying sixth-grade students from Pembroke-Hill School in Kansas City, Mo., who were on a field trip to Tall Oaks Camp in Linwood, Kan., according to authorities.
The trooper’s report stated that the passenger-side tires of the school bus left the right side of the roadway. The driver braked and tried to steer back onto the road, according to the report. The rear of the bus slid sideways down the embankment, the report stated.
The bus then overturned onto its passenger side, the report says.
The passenger list from the Kansas Highway Patrol crash log shows most of the passengers were 11-year-old girls.
The students at the private school who were on the bus included seven persons from Kansas City, Mo.; four from Mission Hills, Kan.; one from Leawood, Kan.; one from Shawnee, Kan.; and one from Kansas City, Kan. There were eight persons whose home cities were unknown at this time. Other passengers’ information was not available yet, according to the report.
More than 30 students and a few adults were on the bus, authorities said.
No one on the school bus was wearing a seat belt, according to the trooper's report.
