Hot and humid weather is expected Tuesday and Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.
Temperatures may reach the lower to middle 90s today, with heat index readings between 95 and 99 this afternoon, according to the weather service.
Temperatures will cool into the lower 70s over the outer areas of the metropolitan area Tuesday night, but the downtown core in Kansas City may remain near 80 degrees through Wednesday morning.
Temperatures on Wednesday will climb into the lower to mid 90s with heat index values approaching 100 degrees.
The weather service advised residents to use extra precautions if they need to be outside on Tuesday. Some tips: Slow down, take regular breaks, wear lightweight clothing, and stay hydrated.
Also, check on those who may not be adequately prepared for the changing weather conditions, including animals and pets.
Today's forecast also said there is a 20 percent chance of showers before 11 a.m. Winds will be 10 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph.
