Firefighters responded to a natural gas leak about 9:02 a.m. Thursday in the 2700 block of North 21st.
Homes on both sides of the street for about a block were evacuated, said Fire Chief John Paul Jones. The site was near 21st, near Georgia to Longwood. The residents went back to their homes in less than two hours.
The cause of the gas leak is thought to have been construction crews working on a sewer line at the site. The gas company was very cooperative, and there were no injuries, he said.
