A fire Friday morning at a home near 8th and Ann is under investigation as suspicious, according to a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department.
The fire started on a rear porch about 5:36 a.m. Feb. 8 at 838 Ann Ave., the spokesman said.
The residents of the one-story wood-framed home had all left the building by the time firefighters arrived. They were alerted by smoke alarms that went off, the spokesman said.
Firefighters searched the home and confirmed no one was in it. They found the fire on the back porch, and it had extended through the exterior walls and up into the attic, the spokesman said.
Crew brought the fire under control within 20 minutes.
The estimated damage to the structure and contents is $20,000, according to the Fire Department.
The fire is under investigation as suspicious, the Fire Department spokesman said. The Red Cross was called to assist three adults and two girls, ages 4 and 5.
