The thermometer registers 93, but the heat index currently, about 1 p.m. July 9, is 103, according to the National Weather Service.
The cooling centers are open when the weather service issues an official excessive heat advisory, which hasn't happened yet today.
In the meantime, residents may cool off by visiting buildings in the area that are air-conditioned, such as the public libraries.

If the heat index reaches 103 or higher, there is free admission to the Turner Aquatic Center for Turner residents and a $1 admission for non-Turner residents. When there are storms, usually the pools are closed.
Spray parks are open at EIsenhower Park, behind Eisenhower Middle School, 2901 N. 72nd St.; Pierson Park, 1800 S. 55th; and Heathwood Park, 10th and Parallel Parkway. The spray parks and free and open to the public.
