Cindy Taylor, director of housing, Kim Wilson Housing, was recently named a recipient of the Maurice Vanderberg Award for Excellence presented by the Homeless Services Coalition of Greater Kansas City.
The award recognizes individuals or agencies that exemplify extraordinary leadership in identifying and compassionately responding to unmet needs of persons who are poor and homeless.
Cited as an outstanding advocate and direct service provider, Taylor has helped individuals who are chronically homeless and those who are near the stage of chronic homelessness obtain needed services and housing. She has been active in the homeless services community for over 20 years – 18 at Swope Health Services and three with Kim Wilson Housing.
At Swope Health Services, Taylor held both direct service and administrative roles. She served as a case manager, did grant writing and grant reporting, and was assistant director of outreach. Upon earning her master’s degree, Taylor did clinical social work with the health care for the homeless program.
She transitioned to Kim Wilson Housing working first as a Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re- Housing Program specialist and was subsequently promoted to director of housing. In this role, Taylor administers three HUD grants for Kim Wilson Housing and the housing component of a re-entry collaborative initiative. She values client contact and makes an effort to get to know the consumers served by Kim Wilson Housing.
“Cindy has the uncanny ability to reserve judgment and see past labels – finding gifts and strengths in people that other professionals tend to miss along the way," said James Glenn, agency executive director. "Cindy is reliable, dependable and becomes the anchor for staff and clients.”
