Community enrichment event plannedhe first-ever TEDxWyandotte event will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, at the Kansas City, Kansas Community College Performing Arts Center.
The event will feature opportunities for networking as well as eight presenters speaking to the theme “Core Impact: Exploring Ideas that Enrich a Community.” Refreshments will be served.
Presenters include Mike Brown, founder of The Brainzooming Group. Mike has been at the forefront of leading culture change and innovative strategies at the Fortune 500 level. Recognized as one of the top innovation bloggers on the web, he shares his ideas on creativity, innovation, and the transformative power of diverse thinking with hundreds of thousands of global readers annually.
Brown has been at the forefront of leading Fortune 500 culture change, contributing new approaches in research, developing simplified tools for innovation and strategy planning. His topic will be titled “Diversity and Ideas in the Porous Community.” While the traditional definition of “community” revolves around common location, ideas with core impact come less from what’s in common, than what’s different. And as more knowledge shifts to the cloud, the concept and importance of location takes on radically new dimensions. This TEDxWyandotte talk explores how creating a porous community that readily cultivates diverse thinking is vital to a truly enriched community.
The local band Making Movies will perform at the event. Making Movies is the product of an unlikely blend of Afro-Cuban rhythms, bilingual songs and a cross-cultural conscience, creating a unique and approachable sound. Making Movies will speak on "Sustainable Music in a Disposable Culture."
The band’s members grew up bicultural, with one foot in Latin America and the other in the United States, and their music is a metaphor for that relationship. Their instruments and tones are found in American indie-rock and are laid over rhythms from salsa, merengue, and cumbia. More and more individuals in this country have a bicultural heritage. Their music represents them as well, and in so doing connects these individuals, creating a community.
Additional presenters will be announced in coming weeks. To register, visit www.KCKCC.edu; select Workforce Development on the Quicklinks; select TEDx Registration The cost of the event is $15.
