I-35 at 7th Street TrafficwayI-35 northbound at 7th Street Trafficway was a huge traffic jam Tuesday morning as emergency bridge repairs closed I-35 down to one lane in Missouri. Traffic was backed up to 18th Street Expressway in Kansas City, Kan. Motorists were advised to find another route if possible. (KC Scout photo)
I-35 at 7th Street Trafficway
Northbound Interstate 35 just before the ramp to Broadway is reduced to one lane at the north end of the Southwest Trafficway Bridge for the next 12 to 24 hours for urgent repairs. To avoid significant delay, motorists are urged to seek an alternate route.
At approximately 2:30 a.m. today, a steel expansion joint that connects two portions of the bridge became dislodged. This unexpected event required crews to shift all traffic to the far left lane.
"We had already reduced northbound I-35 in this location to two lanes for construction," said MoDOT senior construction inspector Mike Frizzell. "Further reducing it to one lane is not something that we expected to have to do."
Motorists are strongly encouraged to seek alternate routes to include I-635, I-435 or 18th Street to US 71 until two lanes can be restored in this work zone.
