A man suffered second- and third-degree burns in an apartment fire today at 4119 Mission Road.
Firefighters found the man lying at the front door of the apartment building, as heavy fire came from the window of a second-floor apartment, a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department said.
The emergency crew had arrived within 2 minutes of the call at 1:21 p.m., according to the Fire Department spokesman.
The man, whose upper body was burned, was immediately transported to the hospital.
Crews immediately attacked the fire, which also had extended to a third-floor apartment, the spokesman said.
All other occupants of the building had already evacuated with the assistance of other residents who alerted them to the fire, according to the spokesman.
The fire is under investigation, the spokesman said.
The Red Cross was contacted to assist 19 adults and 11 children.
Damage to the building was estimated at $180,000, according to the Fire Department.
