Animals at the Kansas City, Kan., George Lee Dunn Animal Control Shelter have been transferred and adopted, as renovations are almost ready to start there.
The animals at the shelter went to foster care, adoption, rescue groups and volunteers for a three-to-four week period. The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City took care of quite a few, according to a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department.
The effort to place the animals throughout the community was led by shelter staff, under the direction of Capt. Michelle Angell.
The animal shelter at 3301 Park Drive will be getting a new epoxy covering for the floor to replace the painted concrete floors, the spokesman said. The epoxy-covered floors were mandated by a new state law and are intended to reduce bacterial growth.
The renovation project will start Feb. 3 and the animal shelter is scheduled to open again the week of Feb. 24, he said. The cost of the renovation to the animal shelter was included in the budget that was approved last year.
The front office at the Dunn Animal Shelter will still be open, conducting business such as licensing, but the shelter will not be able to take in the animals that it normally would, he said.
During this period, animal control officers may do more voluntary compliance, responding to complaints, writing tickets, educating the owners on proper care, and follow up. If the animals are worse on the follow-up, animal control officers will have to take them and find a place for them. If the officers determine that the animal needs to be taken, they will find a place for them.
According to the spokesman, the shelter will not be able to accept surrendered animals during the renovation period. Those who are looking for a missing pet during the renovation period may contact Animal Control Shelter’s main office at 913-321-1445, which will remain open during the renovation.
