Registrations are still being accepted for the second annual Senator Haley WyCo Youth Policy Debate.
The event, which is hosted by Sen. David Haley, D-4th Dist., will be from 4 to 7 p.m. May 11 in the Kansas City Kansas Community College Performing Arts Center, 7250 State Ave.
“This structured debate event began in 2012 as a way to encourage political awareness and active citizenry in Wyandotte County Youth,” Haley said. “The event allows teens an opportunity to articulate their societal concerns and youthful perspective with a unique opportunity to ‘think on their feet’ and be heard by a community audience.”
The event is open to all students attending the five high schools in the Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools, including Harmon, Schlagle, Sumner Academy, Washington and Wyandotte.
No experience is required. No files, evidence, or memorization is required. Students may participate as beginners or experienced and can debate individually or in a duo. Cash prizes are awarded to the top debaters.
Following the debates, Sen. Haley will give an update on recent issues in the 2013 Kansas Legislature.
