Fairfax businesses working to stop metal, other thefts

Fairfax businesses are working to put a stop to metal thefts and burglaries.

Chuck Schlittler, executive director of the Fairfax Industrial Association, said his group is working together with the police to gather information about metal thefts and other burglaries in the industrial district of Kansas City, Kan. He said the group was asked by police to assist with awareness and information efforts among the businesses.

By increasing awareness and gathering information, the group hopes it will lead to apprehension of those responsible, he said. The group today heard from two additional Fairfax businesses with more information, he added.

One recent example of a potential scrap metal case in Fairfax involved a dark green sport utility vehicle towing a trailer, with individuals asking questions about scrap metal at one of the Fairfax plants on Feb. 1, according to Schlittler.

Recent police reports documented a break-in and theft of a box truck at a Fairfax business in early January. Another police report stated that forklift batteries and copper wire were stolen at a Fairfax site on Jan. 19. Two engine blocks were reported stolen in a burglary in December in the Fairfax area.

Despite the incidents, the Fairfax area still has less crime than the rest of Kansas City, Kan., Schlittler said.

"We have a greater working relationship with East Patrol and KCKPD than we’ve ever had, because of relationships developed on both sides," Schlittler said. "We commend them for the job they’ve done."
