Youths dedicate summer weeks to volunteering

Donating six weeks of their summer vacation to volunteer work, 15 high school students from the East Coast are in the Kansas City area to assist nonprofit agencies.
Five of the 15 students from the American Jewish Society for Service were folding papers and laundry, and helping with supplies at the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City, 5445 Parallel Parkway, last week.
They joked that they were “taking it easy” volunteering inside the air-conditioned Humane Society office, after working outdoors the day before when a heat index topped 100 degrees at a Habitat for Humanity building project.
Orianna Pavlik, from the Hudson Valley area of New York, said she drank five 32-ounce bottles of water to keep hydrated while outdoors in the heat.
The students hadn’t been to the Kansas City area previously, although some had been to the Midwest. The students, who are accompanied by adults, will be doing volunteer work for another week before returning home.
Sophie Greenspan, who will be a senior in high school in New Jersey, said she had been going to camp for the past few years when she heard about this program and decided to go.
Orianna said her family usually travels somewhere in the summer, but this year she decided it was better to go somewhere and do community service.
“My family is really into volunteering,” Orianna said.
Part of the reason for volunteering is centered around religious aspects, as well, she said.
“Part of Judaism is about doing service,” she said.
“I lead a very privileged life,” said Hanna Rosenfeld, Atlanta, Ga. “Even though I’m involved in community service, I thought that having a summer filled with it was a good idea.”
And the Kansas City area was a good choice since it wasn’t likely that she would see it at other times.
Zoe Wasserman of Short Hills, N.J., agreed with Hanna on that last point.
“I wanted to see a different part of the country,” she said. “I wanted to do community service.”
Lillian Siegel of Miami, Fla., said the group recently had the opportunity during a social event to meet with a group of Episcopal youth group volunteers who they work with on some of the volunteer projects. They were able to have a dialogue about their religious beliefs and learn more about another faith with the group.
While in Kansas City, the East Coast group also has volunteered at the Kansas City Center for Urban Agriculture, Harvesters, Operation Breakthrough, Village Shalom and the Jewish Community Center.
