Le’Tristan Pledger, a senior at Washington High School, was selected for the Youth Olympic Games in August in Singapore.Pledger was honored at Tuesday night’s Kansas City, Kansas, school board meeting.
Pledger holds seven state titles and is the only athlete from the Midwest chosen to attend the Youth Olympics, said Nancy Brown, athletic director at Washington High School. The games are Aug. 14-26 and will draw 36,000 students from more than 200 nations.
There’s no doubt that Pledger is the best at the long jump in Kansas – and she also holds some national long jump titles. She has set the state record for the long jump, and her record tops all six classes of schools. She also holds the state Class 5A record in the 100-meter hurdles, which she set in May.
Among her many other titles are AAU national champion in 2009 for long jump, 100 meter hurdles and heptathlon, and 2010 USA Junior long jump champion.
Besides her track prowess, Le’Tristan is a cheerleader at Washington, and a member of the volleyball and basketball teams. She also is a Head Start volunteer.
Le’Tristan thanked her parents and also said she is thinking about going to the University of Kansas, Lawrence, where she may take classes leading to a career as an athletic director.
