Wyandotte County Fair continues on for 4-H’ers
Written by Mary Rupert

The kitten was stretching, bending, eager to move around. Spots, an 8-week-old kitten, didn’t sit still very long for a photograph July 19 at 4-H cat judging for the Wyandotte County Fair.Sydney Zimmerman, 9, Kansas City, Kansas, who was showing the cat, answered some questions about pet care from the judge of the pet entries. She held the kitten in front of the pen she had decorated. Then Sydney, a member of the Lucky Clovers 4-H club and a student at Piper Elementary School, told a little bit about the kitten’s history, as Spots stretched some more.
No one exactly knows what sort of cat Spots is because its mother is a feral cat, according to Sydney and her friends and family. Spots’ mother was rescued during freezing weather by Christy Hardwick, a day care provider who’s also a 4-H leader. Now Spots’ mother resides with the Hardwicks and enjoys riding around on a tractor.
While Spots also lives with Christy, Sydney visits Spots frequently, helps take care of it at day care, and has entered Spots as her 4-H project.
It is Sydney’s fourth year in 4-H. She’s also entering bucket calves in the fair this year. Her mother is a Clover Bud leader for 5- and 6-year-olds, including her younger sister, who will be future 4-H club members.
