The Salvation Army Harbor Light Village, 6723 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan., has seen a considerable increase in program growth, due in large part to the efforts of Major Michele Heaver.

Major Michele Heaver has worked tirelessly to incorporate new programs and provide increased awareness throughout the community by hiring staff with specialized education and qualifications. She has also started adding new programs based on community need.

One of the programs that she has added is the Open Gym program. This program provides supervised structure to community youth ages 14 to 17. Participants may play basketball, foosball, bumper pool and regular pool. The program is open every Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. There is a $2 charge.

Another program that she has added is Parents Night Out. The first event is scheduled for Feb. 14 and is open to families who applied for Christmas assistance at the Kansas City, Kan., Corps. The program will be open on February 14 from 6 pm to 10 pm. It is available for children ages 5 to 12. The children will receive dinner. Afterwards, children will be split into age appropriate groups and participate in craft activities and games. At 9 p.m., all children will participate in “Wind Down” hour which includes a movie. Parents will pick their children up at 10 p.m. Families who received fliers regarding the event are encouraged to call and reserve their spots, as spots are limited. More dates will be added later.

The gym is open to the community from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday for anyone who wants to come in out of the weather and get some walking exercise.

The Salvation Army Harbor Light Village also has many volunteer opportunities available. Volunteers must fill out a volunteer application which can be done online at www.salarmymokan.org. Volunteer opportunities are available in the following areas: Food pantry, data entry, youth program, gym program, Christmas and seasonal programs and emergency disaster services.
