Every year for the past few years, on the day before the German Fest is held at St. Martin Lutheran Church, 13849 Hollingsworth Road, the church members have greeted the Atchison cross-country team.
As part of its homecoming activities, the Atchison cross-country team runs through the area from Harmon High School to Atchison.
Pastor Mark Fischer of St. Martin Church said the team has stopped by the church three years in a row now.
The church plans to have Gatorade or snacks waiting for them this year on Oct. 4, he added.
It will be an interesting combination of young athletes greeted by mostly elderly congregation volunteers.
“It’s a way of sharing with others we encounter in our expression of community,” he said.
If it hadn’t been for the church members setting up for the annual festival, they never would have met the young cross-country athletes, he added.
The church volunteers are working on the German Fest, to be held this year from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5. The annual festival will feature homemade sauerkraut, smoked pulled pork sandwiches and other refreshments.
Also featured will be live music from the Grisnik Orchestra, German dancing from the Blautaler Shuhplattler Dancers, a silent auction, beer garden and children’s activities. Tickets to the Oct. 5 event are $10 for adults and $5 for children.
