Students interested in financial aid at colleges may attend Kansas College Goal Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 23.
The event will be held at Kansas City Kansas Community College, upper Jewell building, 7250 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan.
At College Goal Sunday, held at different sites across Kansas, students may receive assistance on filling out financial aid forms.
Students and parents may meet one-on-one with financial advisers at the free College Goal Sunday event. They will receive help filling out the required Free Application for Federal Student Aid, the first step to apply for financial aid.
More than $10,000 in scholarships will be awarded to students at the event. One attendee will receive a $500 scholarship at each of the 21 College Goal Sunday locations. The scholarship may be used for the 2014 academic year at any college or trade school in the country, provided the student is a first semester freshman in the fall of 2014.
Each year, the U.S. Department of Education makes more than $150 billion in post–secondary financial aid available to students throughout the nation. College Goal Sunday makes applying for financial aid easier.
According to the latest annual survey by the College Board, the nation’s public four-year universities increased tuition by 4.8 percent in 2012-2013. Private four-year university tuition increased 4.2 percent and public two-year college tuition increased 5.8 percent. Many families aren’t prepared for the high costs.
Families who have completed their 2013 income tax returns or bring their 2013 earnings statements to College Goal Sunday will be able to complete the FAFSA online. Despite inclement weather, last year College Goal Sunday helped more than 600 Kansas students obtain financial aid. Volunteers and financial aid professionals will staff the 16th annual event.
