‘Salute to Hispanic Heritage’ luncheon planned

   The Armourdale Renewal Association will hold its "Salute to Hispanic Heritage" business luncheon at noon Sept. 10 at the Armourdale Recreation Center, 730 Osage, Kansas City, Kansas. Butterfly photo contest ends

CABA parade scheduled Sept. 11

   The 33rd annual Central Avenue Parade is scheduled Saturday, Sept. 11. Renaissance Festival open on weekends

   The Renaissance Festival runs through Oct. 17 at 126th and State, Bonner Springs. A 16th century English village comes to life with entertainment, food, fun and activities for the family. Alcott Arts to present ‘Shakespeare in Parking Lot’

   Alcott Arts Center will present “Sitplot IV” or Shakespeare in the Parking Lot IV at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 180 S. 18th. Village West Winefest planned Sept. 11

   Village West Winefest is planned from 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Schlitterbahn, 9400 State. Visitors to Winefest will sample more than 200 wines and 100 beers from around the world, as well as food from more than 25 restaurants in the Kansas City area. Three bands are scheduled to play. Program to discuss prostate cancer awareness

   Dr. Joshua Broghammer and Dr. Moben Mirza will discuss prostate cancer, the most common cancer in men, in a program from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m. Sept. 16 in the community room at KU MedWest, 7405 Renner Road, Shawnee. The doctors are from the University of Kansas Hospital, Kansas City, Kansas. Prostate cancer affects one out of six men. The program will cover prostate cancer, the use of the daVinci robot for prostatectomies, erectile dysfunction and incontinence. Slovene Fest planned Sept. 25

   The Slovene Fest is planned Sept. 25 at Holy Family Church, 6th and Ohio, Kansas City, Kansas. The event begins with Mass at 4 p.m. at the church, at Orchard and Ohio, and the festival is from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Featured at the festival are foods including sarma (cabbage rolls), Polish sausage, strudel and povitica. The Don Lipovac and Brian McCarty polka bands will play. The Hravatski Obicaj Tamburitzans also will entertain. A silent auction is planned. A shuttle bus will run from 6th and Ann.

Driver safety class offered

Smoking cessation class offered

   A smoking cessation class will be offered from 4 to 5 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Oct. 11 through Oct. 20 at Providence Medical Center, 8929 Parallel Parkway, in the cardiac rehab department. The class will focus on why individuals smoke, physical and psychological addictions, methods to quit smoking, picking a quit date, and how to be successful with cessation smoking. Breast cancer risks among topics to be discussed Oct. 12

   Become prepared to fight breast cancer and associated complications in an Oct. 12, free program from The University of Kansas Hospital. In “Knowledge is Power: New Facts about Breast Cancer Risks, Bone Density and Bone Health,” three of the hospital’s experts — Jennifer Klemp, Dr. Marc Inciardi, and Dr. Leigh Eck — will present the latest medical information.  They will discuss breast cancer risk factors, the latest screening methods and how to prevent bone health problems such as osteoporosis, particularly while undergoing breast cancer treatment. A national speaker, Nancy Cappello, breast cancer survivor and advocate, also will share the story of her journey from tragedy to triumph. The program will be presented from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center, 2345 McGee, in Kansas City, Mo. There is no charge for this program.  Treatments, prevention for heart failure to be discussed

   Learn what simple steps can be taken to reduce the chance of developing heart failure. The best treatments also will be discussed in “Heart Failure: Understanding the Causes and Treatments,” a program from The University of Kansas Hospital. The program will be from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 19 in the community room at KU MedWest, 7405 Renner Road, in Shawnee. Congestive heart failure is a condition that can develop in people whose hearts have been damaged by heart attacks and can barely move the blood, or in people whose heart muscle squeezes normally but relaxes poorly.  Dr. Charles Porter will lead this program. Eyelids, tear ducts to be discussed

    “An Overview of Common Oculofacial Plastic Problems,” will be presented by The University of Kansas Hospital Oct. 20. Dr. Jason Sokol will discuss care of problems related to the eyelids, tear ducts and orbits. He also will talk about cosmetic surgery options of the eyelids and face, along with cosmetic procedures that can enhance or restore a facial appearance. Some of the reasons for pursuing surgical intervention of the face and eyes include facial trauma, tumors, eyelid abnormalities, drooping eyelids, ophthalmic Graves’ disease and other orbital issues. This free program will be presented from noon to1 p.m. Oct. 20 in the community room at KU MedWest, 7405 Renner Road, in Shawnee. There is no charge for this program.    Skin care and facial rejuvenation, including surgery and minimally invasive treatments, will be discussed in an upcoming program from The University of Kansas Hospital. “Timeless Face”will be presented from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 26 in the community room at KU MedWest, 7405 Renner Road, in Shawnee. YMCA sponsors Boo Bash

   Get the facts about snoring from The University of Kansas Hospital’s Dr. Christopher Larsen.
