Global Day of Prayer observance planned May 27

   Kansas City pastors, ministry leaders and churches are invited to attend and participate in the Wyandotte County Global Day of Prayer from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 27, at Kansas City Kansas Community College Performing Arts Center, 7250 State.

   Global Day of Prayer originated in South Africa in 2002 with more than 200 nations in concerted prayer. Prayer, praise and worship will be offered up for the community, city, state and nation.

   Global Day of Prayer in Kansas City, Kan., is sponsored in partnership with Connect the Dottes and the Citywide Prayer Movement.

 

Wyandotte County GOP to meet May 21

   The Wyandotte County GOP will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 21, at Eisenhower Recreation Center, behind Eisenhower Middle School, 2901 N. 72nd St.

   At 6:30 p.m., the group will have hamburgers or hot dogs, potato salad and baked beans. Donations will be accepted toward costs.

   The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.




 

Democratic breakfast planned Saturday

   The May Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast will meet this Saturday, May 19, at Dave and Busters at The Legends, 1843 Village West Parkway. Parking is available on the second floor of the parking garage on Parallel Parkway.

   Speakers this month will be State Sen. Anthony Hensley, Democratic leader of the Kansas Senate; and State Rep. Kathy Wolfe Moore, D-36th Dist.

   A breakfast buffet begins at 8:15 a.m., with the program starting at 9:15 a.m. The cost for the buffet is $10; students and those on limited incomes may pay $7.

   State Rep. Valdenia Winn, Rashanda Rhodes and Scott Mackey were recently elected as Democratic National Convention delegates from Wyandotte County at the Third Congressional District Democratic Convention held May 5 at KCKCC. Museum exhibit on display

   “For All the World to See,” a nationally touring exhibit, will be on display through May 25 at the Wyandotte County Museum, 126th and State, Bonner Springs. Sponsored by the Mid-America Arts Alliance, it is an exhibit of photos, television segments, artifacts and art posters about how the visual culture, images and media, changed the modern civil rights movements and individuals’ attitudes toward civil rights. Workshop on depression offered

   A workshop on “Depression in the African-American Community” will be offered from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 17, at Oak Ridge Missionary Baptist Church, 9301 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kan. Grinter Jamboree to be May 17

   The Grinter Jamboree will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 17, with Stranger Creek Band. The theme of the Grinter Place Friends event will be "'50s music night." Admission is $8 and includes a sloppy Joe sandwich, chips, ice tea or coffee. Those attending may wear their high school sweaters, sleeves rolled up T-shirts, poodle skirt, bobby socks, or saddle oxfords. Modern clothes are also acceptable. UG Commission to meet May 17

   The Unified Government Commission will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 17, at City Hall, lobby level, 701 N. 7th. On the agenda are public hearings on the budget and Community Development Block Grant, along with a continuation of the Wyandotte Plaza community improvement district proposal, the Board of Public Utilities proposal to buy part of a natural gas power plant, and other items. Home economists to meet

   Area home economists are expected to gather for a Home and Community Group FACS of Greater Kansas City program by Tim Tivol and Wanda Allen Studio. The group will meet at 11 a.m. May 18 at the bank of Prairie Village building, 3515 W. 75th St., Suite 115, Prairie Village. Luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m.


Grief workshop offered

   “Surviving Loss: Moving Forward with your Grief,” a workshop sponsored by Mental Health America of the Heartland, will be offered from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 18, at Faith Deliverance Family Worship Center, 3043 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Town hall meetings to be held on health

   The Wyandotte Health for All Task Force will hold town hall meetings May 18 and May 30. A town hall meeting will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May 18 at the Wyandotte County Health Department, 619 Ann Ave. Another town hall meeting will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. May 30 at Kansas City Kansas Community College, 7250 State Ave., Jewell Building, lower level, Room 2325-2326. Bike rodeo to be May 19

   The sixth annual Kiwanis West Bike Rodeo will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 19, at the Schlitterbahn, 9400 State Ave. Elementary school children may receive a free bicycle helmet and a T-shirt. Children are encouraged to bring their bicycles. There will be giveaways and car seat safety checks provided.

Program offered for better couples communication

ServSafe class scheduled May 22 

   A ServSafe class will be Tuesday, May 22, at K-State Research and Extension, Wyandotte County, 1216 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kan.  The class will run from 1:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. This class is a nationally recognized food safety employee-training program for anyone who is a food service employee or interested in food service employment. The cost is $10, which includes class materials, workbook, and certificate. The deadline for registry is May 16. DASH plan to be discussed

Center City AARP to meet May 24

   The Center City Chapter AARP No. 1544 will review national AARP 2012-2013 manual changes and its effect on local chapter function as well as discuss local Unified Government emergency preparedness at the 10:30 a.m. meeting Thursday, May 24, at the Pat Hanlon Center, 11th and Ridge. Members are asked to bring information for the committee’s consideration with their August fun day suggestions. There are no special membership requirements to join Center City AARP except that a current national AARP membership number is required. Refreshments will be pot luck.    Join Dr. Larry Geier to learn more about Lynch disease, an inherited condition that increases the risk of colon cancer and other cancers. Find out about mutual funds at free library program

   At a free Entrepreneurial Endeavors program at 6 p.m. May 31 at the Main Kansas City, Kan., Public Library, 625 Minnesota, a presentation will be given about mutual funds.  Scott Kaufmann, president and owner of Kaufmann Financial, will present, "On the Right Path: The Ten Most Frequently Asked Questions about Mutual Funds."  He will hold a question-and-answer session after the presentation.  Registration is not required to the free event.
