The State Avenue Corridor Planning Committee, a division of Business West, will hold its fourth annual meeting for landowners and all other interested persons at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in the Conference Center, near the pond at Kansas City Kansas Community College, 7250 State Ave.
The guest speaker will be Rob Richardson, the director of the Unified Government’s Urban Planning and Land Use Department. Richardson will discuss the overall plan for State Avenue.
One of the proposed aspects of this plan would be to develop the area at 73rd Street and State Avenue, now a vacant auto dealership, into an apartment complex and limited retail.
The cost for the State Avenue meeting will be $15, and will include breakfast. To make reservations, telephone 913-766-4300 or 913-406-6266 (cell) or email email@example.com.
Business West, in cooperation with the Unified Government, is gathering signatures for a petition that would establish a community improvement district along State Avenue from 64th to 94th streets and 78th Street from State to Riverview avenues.
The benefit district would focus on three core areas—appearance, security and marketing. The Unified Government has committed about $11 million to improve the roadway from 73rd to 94th streets. Attractive landscaping is enhancing the medians. The benefit district would help assure that debris is picked up from the right-of-way. Security personnel would work with West Patrol, community and college police officers.
A marketing committee has recently been organized, headed by Nancy Winkler of Winkler’s Diamonds. This committee is developing a “Looking West” directory that will promote the corridor area as a viable retail center; newcomers, including those who work for Cerner, and more established residents will be targeted.
Business West recently held its 28th annual meeting. Officers and directors were elected. Officers include Kathleen Baska Meyers, past president; Marisa Gray, president; Jane Winkler Philbrook, president-elect; and Lesley Johnson, treasurer. Directors elected for two-year terms include Sheryl Becker, Matt Browning, Pat Sedlock and Nancy Winkler. Those directors who will continue to serve unexpired terms will include DeeAnn Richards Behrens, Melissa Bynum, Tim DeWitt, Joe Maderak, Rusty Roberts and Don Scaro. Murrel Bland will continue as the executive director.
Marisa Gray is president of Business West.
