The following are goals and desired accomplishments for 2014 that were approved at a Business West board meeting Wednesday, Dec. 18.
The work on the Community Improvement District should be completed by securing the necessary 55 percent of signatures by acreage and assessed valuation. Business West would continue to convene its monthly State Avenue Corridor Planning Committee. This should be accomplished by Dec. 31.
A combined public-private celebration of all parties involved, marking the completion of the resurfacing of State Avenue and the remodeling of Wyandotte Plaza. This should be accomplished by late spring or early summer.
Holding a benefit for the Community College Endowment Association at The Wine Barn. This should be accomplished in the first quarter.
Calling on all units of local government, as we have during the past six years, urging elected officials to hold the line on property taxes. This should be accomplished before elected officials approve their budgets in late summer.
Encouraging legislation that would make the appeal process for business property values much simpler. Legislators should be aware of our position on this issue before the Kansas Legislature convenes in early January.
Continuing to cooperate with other business associations including the Chamber of Commerce, the Wyandotte Economic Development Council and neighborhood organizations in areas of common concern including quality residential and commercial development. This would be accomplished by attending the monthly meetings of the Congressional Forum, the neighborhood business association executives, the Legislative Committee, the Village West Committee and other such appropriate meetings and activities.
Arranging to hear a report from Mayor Mark Holland on Unified Government activities. This should be accomplished probably in June at a membership meeting.
Working with the Marketing Committee to enhance retail trade including the production of a 2015 Looking West publication. This should be accomplished by the end of the year. Business West should encourage the Unified Government to erect signs directing traffic east of I-435. A resolution from Business West and the Leavenworth Road Association should be submitted to the appropriate Unified Commission Committee by March 31.
Publication of the Monday Report, the Business West Bulletin and Business West News; this should be done on a weekly, monthly and annual basis, respectively.
Securing an endowment 501 c 3 organization to help Community College scholarships. This should be filed by July 1.
Working with Kathleen Baska to attract new members. Business West should have 100 members by the end of the year.
Upgrading the businesswest.org website including more connectivity with members and the posting of the Looking West directory in electronic form. This should be done by July 1.
Continuing to cooperate with the Community College in offering high quality, practical social media training. A social media workshop should be completed by late summer.
Holding the Annual Meeting. This should be accomplished in September.
