LRA at rowing event
LRA at rowing event
Leavenworth Road Association members spent their Saturday morning, March 30, at Wyandotte County Lake providing the concession stand for the spectators of the KU-K-State Sunflower Showdown rowing event.
We had our volunteers and some of our board members ready to cook, brew, serve and enjoy the competition. Our board members pitching in were Deniese Davis, John Zawacki, Bill Murray, Rose Marie Allman, and Dixie Kaster. I was there also. Then we had members who showed up to help unload our vehicles, help with the concession stand and then helped us reload the vehicles. Those members were John Cantwell, Darrell Yochim, along with Eddie Minor, one of our newest LRA members, Sue Reaves, a candidate on our LRA ballot for our board. Our election is April 9.
We enjoy staying busy, so we need these type of board members that are always first in line when I need volunteers. Thanks so much for your time and energy on this cool, cloudy, early morning.
These rowing events are well attended by very enthusiastic supporters. The teams are amazing in all they do just to prepare for the race. There is so much more than jumping in a long canoe at the shore line. It appears they take responsibility for their equipment, carry it to the shoreline, maintain the connections of the oars mechanics, and other preparations . Then they do a run to warm up before their race.
The crowds come dressed in their colors, even their dogs are dressed in colors. We saw a poodle that had a purple pouf head and pouf tail with a dyed Wildcat on its back. Enthusiastic crowd, yelling, holding signs, and cheering their teams. We will be there again May 4 for the big tournament, enjoying the event and the people.
We have a couple new businesses on Leavenworth Road. I want to tell about one of them and will be visiting the other two this coming week. Vic & Dave’s Pizzeria opened March 22. The owners are Al and Sheri Seeman, the name is actually after their sons.
There will be a ribbon cutting and grand opening April 6. The food is actual Italian recipes, old family secret recipes. They will have carry-out, small eat-in area, and they also provide delivery. There is small extra charge for delivery. They have a special pizza, only available on Leavenworth Road, named “Meat-Me” on Leavenworth Road, it includes Italian hamburger, Italian sausage, pork sausage, ham and pepperoni. A few other items on the menu include Veggie Delight , a vegetable pizza, Meatball sandwich, with family recipe meatballs, Hot Wings, an Italian Sub, and that is just a sample of the menu items. Stop by, tell them LRA sent you , enjoy meeting the owners and their food.
The address is 8050 Leavenworth Road, and the business phone number is 919-766-3528.
Just a reminder: The LRA April meeting will be at 6 p.m. April 9 for a potluck dinner and social hour. LRA will be providing sliced potatoes, creamy chicken casserole. It will also be that “E” word, our election of officers for six board members. Then we hope we will not hear the “E” word for a while.
Lou Braswell is the executive director of the Leavenworth Road Association.
