In April of 2012, Leavenworth Road Association membership voted to expand our boundaries to State Avenue, so I want to tell you about a business that has been on State for 50-plus years.
It is another of those special family-owned, family-operated businesses that started small and it has expanded, also. I am talking about Frontier Steak House at 94th and State Avenue.
In those 50-plus years they have enlarged the original building, but along with that they have added new ideas, new menu items, but it has always stayed family-focused. Mary Laffoon, owner, still cooks every day, your order is prepared at the time you order, all home-cooked style. Oh and did I mention, Mary just turned 92 years old. Dennis and Ron Laffoon, co-owners, Mary’s sons, are her extra help in the kitchen, taught by Mary herself.
Along with all the great food, going now on six-plus years, Frontier started having its music shows on Wednesday evenings. Talk about local talent, Hole in the Wall Gang, with Dennis Laffoon, Terry Hancock, Oscar Pope, Walt Chambers and Ron Laffoon can deliver a show that compares to any of the celebrities you could see in Las Vegas or the Sprint Center. They also provide guest appearances with more local residents, Donna Hensley, Debi Ward and on occasion, Jim Winters. The family is amazing at entertaining, in the last few months Mary has come out and showed her singing talents. She has received standing ovations. These shows are a regular event on Wednesday evenings, reservations are suggested, since there are a number of us customers that know, Frontier is the place to be on Wednesday evenings.
This great food and entertainment business also has special shows throughout the year, with impersonations of Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn and others. Again, such fantastic entertainment right here in Kansas City, Kan.
In the spring and summertime, on Tuesday evening is bikers’ night, out on the patio and a variety of bands, including the Hole in the Wall gang.
The Frontier owners are amazing, each year they do a benefit for Children’s Mercy. This event grows each year, it begins with a breakfast, a bike run that returns back to the restaurant for food, silent auction items and regular auctioneering on the larger items, more music from lots of bands, and some personal stories of the Laffoons’ devotion to Children’s Mercy. If you haven’t figured it out yet, this business and its owners are very devoted to its customers, and to its causes. We as customers are so privileged to have them right here in Kansas City, Kan.
As I said our boundaries of the Leavenworth Road Association were expanded last year to now include I-635 to I-435, east to west and north to south, Missouri River to State Avenue. We are happy to have such a business like Frontier included in our boundaries.
Leavenworth Road Association meets on the second Tuesday of every month at Trinity Community fellowship hall, lower level, 5010 Parallel Parkway. We begin with a potluck dinner-social hour at 6 p.m.,followed by the meeting at 7 p.m. Make plans to visit us for one of these meetings,
